Garden Rooms

Everything that a traditional conservatory is not - Garden rooms is inside and out.

Approach

Garden rooms is the realisation of a client dream to immerse themselves within their garden from the shelter of their home. The thirty square meter addition is the result of a conversation about being in a sheltred outdoor space, an interpretation of a conservatory, reading in the sun whilst under the shadows of a tree, and experiencing the garden on a rainy day whilst under cover.

Design

The plan form of the small building is square, with an adjacent smaller square forming a quieter reading space. The main space is glazed on two sides and above using the timber structure for direct support. Opening out to the garden the doors are set within the main external volume, create a threshold between outside and in, and form an outdoor shelter under the main glazed roof. The existing garden space has been reworked to create a series of outdoor rooms to echo the building's scale. From the street the new addition is bearly visible, sat behind beach hedging.

Construction

The CNC cut laminated timber grid shell structure captures the idea of sitting under the branches of a tree, whilst invisibly supporting high performance glazing to mitigate heat gains in summer and retain heat in the winter. A seamlesss galvanised steel exterior cladding evokes traditional garden structures sat on a honed slate tiled plinth.
